    THE POYNTER INSTITUTE
    offers news and commentary about the journalism industry, information about its educational and career advancement programs and an excellent collection of links to media-related web sites. Jim Romenesko’s Media News, with up-to-the-minute information and chatter about the news business, is now part of the Poynter Institute’s site.

    INVESTIGATIVE REPORTERS AND EDITORS
    has information about IRE’s extensive education and training programs, publications, contests and professional assistance. The site includes a directory of investigative journalists around the world and a special section on how to make use of the Freedom of Information Act.

    THE NEW YORK TIMES NAVIGATOR
    contains numerous links to reference and political internet sites of use to working reporters.

    THE TRANSACTIONAL RECORDS ACCESS CLEARINGHOUSE
    offers a vast treasure-trove of data concerning U.S. Government enforcement activities, incuding the federal courts and prosecutors, the FBI, the Internal Revenue Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and all other civilian agencies. TRAC is a non-profit, non-partisan organization associated with Syracuse University.

    CENTER ON BUDGET AND POLICY PRIORITIES
    has research and analysis on the federal government’s taxation and spending policies and programs.

    THE CENTER FOR PUBLIC INTEGRITY
    exposes abuses of the public trust, in both the government and private sectors, and serves as a valuable resource for investigative journalists.The center’s web site contain’s additional information about its work and resources. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists acts in a similar watchdog capacity for journalists around the world.

    COMMITTEE TO PROTECT JOURNALISTS
    works in defense of press freedom around the world. The CPJ web site includes current news about efforts to curtail the free flow of information and actions that threaten journalists’ safety.

    CENTER FOR RESPONSIVE POLTICS
    acts as a guide to money in politics — who gives it, who gets it, what it buys — and provides extensive data from public campaign finance records.
