Louisiana school district notifies data breach victims after grantee investigation

New reporting by The 74, a nonprofit news outlet covering education, shows that Louisiana school officials only notified victims that their data had been compromised in a cyberattack after media coverage of the issue. With support from the Fund, The 74 and The Acadiana Advocate uncovered the data breach last year. The school district insisted that student and teacher information wasn’t hacked, and the reporting showed that it was – and showed that the school district likely violated state law by not notifying the victims that their sensitive information had been hacked and not notifying the state Attorney General about it. In a follow-up report this month, the journalists obtained emails showing that when the earlier investigation was published, the state Attorney General’s office contacted the school district to warn them of their obligations under the law – and only then did the school district finally tell people that their personal data was accessed.
