As part of a long-term investigation into police disciplinary files in New York, supported by the Fund, freelancer Sammy Sussman obtained the disciplinary file of New York City Mayor Eric Adams when he worked for the New York Police Department. Adams’ record reveals that he lost vacation days in 2006 after he spoke inaccurately and seemingly in his official capacity about counter-terrorism operations that he had not witnessed and was not authorized to comment on. Sussman partnered with a reporter at Hell Gate to report on these files and the parallels and discrepancies between how this disciplinary case was handled and how Adams has addressed recent questions about statements posted by senior NYPD officials in his administration.
