Agustin (Augie) Armendariz is an award-winning investigative journalist who specializes in data analysis, research and technical reporting. He is the Senior Data Reporter at the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, where he has contributed to groundbreaking projects that have uncovered corruption in global financial markets, illicit transactions in major cryptocurrency exchanges, Russian influence over Western oil companies and more.
Previously, Armendariz was a reporter at the New York Times, contributing data analysis to investigative stories and the daily report. Earlier in his career Armendariz was an investigative reporter specializing in data analysis for the Center for Investigative Reporting, where he was part of California Watch, a collaborative effort among news organizations across the state to cover key issues. He conducted the data analysis and developed a news app for CIR’s investigation into high opiate prescription rates among veterans, which received Peabody Award. Prior to that, Armendariz was a database specialist on the San Diego Union-Tribune’s watchdog team and a database developer and researcher at the Center for Public Integrity.
