The ongoing tariff war between the United States and China has driven up demand for soy produced in Brazil – and record levels of soy production are likely to have a significant environmental impact. A 580-mile railroad through the Amazon has been proposed to support increased soy production, but Indigenous communities and environmental advocates oppose it. With support from the Fund, Kevin Damasio dug into the issue for Ambiental Media and Mongabay, analyzing data and interviewing farmers, environmentalists and Indigenous people.
