One of the largest providers of housing for homeless people in San Francisco announced this month that it is shutting down, after an investigation by the San Francisco Chronicle and UC Berkeley Investigative Reporting Program uncovered widespread neglect, mismanagement and misconduct. With support from the Fund, Matthew Mitchell has reported for the last several months on resident deaths, alleged sexual assaults by staff and rampant financial mismanagement in HomeRise, a nonprofit organization with multiyear city contracts worth nearly a quarter billion dollars. The investigation sparked the resignation of the organization’s CEO and led the city to announce it wouldn’t renew its contracts. Now, HomeRise says it will close entirely, and the city will transition its 17 facilities for 1,500 residents to new providers.
