An investigation by Hola Cultura, with a seed grant from the Fund, mapped areas in Washington, DC, where healthy trees have been removed over the last five years – and found that the most affected area is Ward 8 in the Southeast section on the city, which is more diverse and less affluent than other parts of the city. The reporting also examined the health impact of removing trees from these neighborhoods. The reporting was co-published in Washington City Paper. Hola Cultura is a nonprofit organization dedicated to Latino culture in Washington, DC; the organization’s Storytelling Program for Experiential Learning brings together college students, young professionals and high-school students to work with veteran journalists.
