For Rolling Stone, Antonia Juhasz traveled through rural Louisiana and New Orleans to talk to local community members about how President Donald Trump’s tax bill would gut funding for environmental work – and how that would impact people’s lives. An EPA employee told her that the result will surely be that more people get sick and die. With support from the Fund, Juhasz met with community leaders who have worked for years to improve conditions in an 85-mile stretch along the Mississippi River known as Cancer Alley, which is congested with fossil fuel and petrochemical plants that are heavily concentrated in Black neighborhoods. Cancer rates in this area are several times the national average.
