With support from the Fund, the Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism examined thousands of conversations on Truth Social to trace how conservatives are amplifying President Trump’s misinformation about Africa, at the same time that the Trump Administration is cutting U.S. assistance to the continent. CCIJ used the disinformation tracking platform Junkipedia, a project by the Algorithmic Transparency Institute, part of the nonpartisan National Conference on Citizenship. The found amplification of Trump’s false claims about African people and countries, the posting of unverified claims about a Jan. 6 protester, and the citation of scientific studies with African subjects that endorsed the use of the drug ivermectin, a dewormer, to help treat the COVID-19 vaccine.
