Hundreds of people from Oklahoma have sought treatment at drug rehabilitation facilities in California over the last several years, enticed with the promise of luxury housing near the beach paid for by insurance plans that were sometimes subsidized with federal funding. Insurance companies sued the providers, claiming they fraudulently signed people up and submitted “inflated, fake charges” to reap more than $20 million in insurance payments. For The Frontier, with support from the Fund, Kayla Branch interviewed six Oklahomans who attended treatment at California programs. They told her there were few treatment programs, and some said they were told to leave after their insurance stopped payments. Two said they were told to use drugs again so their insurance would pay for more time in a detox facility.
