Please join us next Friday, October 31, at noon Eastern for a free webinar on how to cover police misconduct in shelters for homeless people and migrants. This webinar will include information on how to get funding for these investigations.

Sammy Sussman will share how he uncovered a long-running pattern of abuse and impunity among “peace officers” working in New York City’s little-known homeless shelter police department, a small force that is separate from the New York Police Department. Drawing on previously unreleased disciplinary records, Sussman and a team working for MuckRock and New York Focus found repeated instances of excessive force, assault and falsified reports by Department of Homeless Services officers – often against some of the city’s most vulnerable residents.
Sussman received a seed grant for early reporting and then a full grant from the Fund for this investigation – one of several such projects that the Fund has supported to investigate shelter conditions.
Sussman will share concrete tips and resources that other journalists can use to investigate policing and other conditions in shelters. The webinar will be led and moderated by Ellen Weiss, Vice President of the Fund’s Board of Directors.
Everyone who registers for the Oct. 31 webinar will receive a tip sheet from Sussman and a recording of the session.
