With the public and policymakers increasingly focused on questions about expanding data centers in the U.S., journalists are covering this story from many angles – including the potential environmental impact of new data centers, corporate tactics to push through construction approval, and the reaction from local communities.
The Fund for Investigative Journalism is hosting a live webinar Wednesday, October 7, at noon Eastern, with tips, tools and resources for covering data centers.

The one-hour session will feature two journalists who are doing deep investigative reporting on data centers with support from the Fund:
- Lauren Ober, whose reporting for Reveal examined local response to plans for a huge data center in Northern Virginia
- Edward Donnelly, who has uncovered corporations’ covert lobbying efforts to change regulations so they can build data centers in Georgia and Pennsylvania
Both journalists will share concrete resources and tools they’ve developed in their reporting. The session will be moderated by veteran investigative journalist Ellen Weiss, who serves as president of the Fund’s board of directors. Everyone who registers for the webinar will receive a tip sheet on covering data centers and a link to the recording of the full session.
