Katie Thornton will discuss how she investigated the spread of anti-democracy conspiracy theories and neo-Nazi hate via radio – and how regulators have enabled it. The first season of Thornton’s investigative podcast, “The Divided Dial,” broadcast by WNYC’s “On the Media,” received a Peabody Award. The new season just aired, uncovering how shortwave radio went from a propaganda tool for governments to a propaganda tool for right-wing extremists and cults. The new season reveals how Wall Street has been quietly trying to gain control of this often-ignored stretch of the public airwaves.

Thornton will share concrete tips and resources that other journalists can use in their long-form audio work. She received grants and other support from the Fund for Investigative Journalism for both seasons of her podcast. The webinar will be led and moderated by Ellen Weiss, Vice President of the Fund’s Board of Directors.

The next deadlines to apply for grants from the Fund for Investigative Journalism are in early September. Details, an FAQ, videos with tips for proposals and more information are online here: https://fij.org/apply-for-a-grant/. For more information, email [email protected].
